Estuaries of the Cape

This is a scientific reference publication produced by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The report compiles and summarises the scientific knowledge available at the time about several individual estuarine systems in the Cape region of South Africa. The book presents concise synopses of specific estuaries – including Buffels (West and East), Elsies, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Steenbras – describing their geography, hydrology, ecological characteristics, flora and fauna and human influences. It brings together existing research, environmental data and previous studies to provide an overview of the physical and biological conditions of these estuaries. The purpose of the report is to support scientific understanding, environmental management and conservation planning for Cape estuaries by consolidating scattered information into a single accessible source.
